Back-to-School Spine and Backpack Tips for Kids

smiling kids wearing backpacksAs families settle back into school routines in late January and early February, small daily habits can have a real impact on how kids feel during the week. Between carrying books, sitting in class, and homework at the table, posture and backpack choices can shape comfort, energy, and focus. The good news? Helpful changes are often simple and easy to build into the day (and kids usually respond well to clear, positive reminders).

Basics for Growing Bodies

A well-fitting backpack helps keep the load more evenly balanced. Look for a two-strap bag that sits snugly against the back, with the bottom of the bag resting around the child’s mid back rather than low near the hips. Adjust the straps so the bag is close to the body, not swinging.

Try to keep the bag light by packing only what is needed for the day. If the school uses laptops or sports gear, consider whether some items can be stored at school or carried separately when practical. Encourage kids to use both straps, rather than slinging the bag over one shoulder.

Everyday Posture at School and Home

In class and during homework, aim for a chair and desk setup where feet can rest on the floor (or a sturdy footrest) and your child can sit tall without leaning forward. If screen time is part of learning, remind kids to bring the device up closer to eye level rather than bending the neck down for long periods.

Regular movement breaks matter too. A quick stand up, stretch, or walk around every so often can help reduce stiffness and restlessness.

Easy Movement Ideas for Your Child

Daily movement can be as simple as a walk or scooter ride before school, active play after school, or stretching between tasks. Sport, dancing in the lounge room, or a quick backyard game can all help kids reset after sitting.

As Dr Sean Mahony (Chiropractor) puts it, “Back to school is a great time to check in on the little habits, because small adjustments done consistently can make day-to-day school life feel easier.”

A Gentle Reminder As School Routines Settle In

As the school year gets underway, it can be helpful to keep an eye on how your child is feeling each day. Early in the term, routines are still taking shape, which can make it a good time to notice what’s working well and what might need a small tweak.

Noticing signs of discomfort, fatigue, or reluctance to carry a school bag can be useful cues to pause and reassess what your child needs. Even small changes can help make school days feel more comfortable as the weeks roll on.
