Dry Needling at Bayside Chiropractic Collective

woman with needles for therapy on shoulderExperiencing tight muscles? Acute pain? If you’re looking for a tried-and-true way to get your muscles to relax and experience pain relief, consider dry needling. With this therapy, a dry needle (one without medication) is inserted into the specified area to work on myofascial trigger points; those areas can be extra tight and affect the whole muscle and all the fascia surrounding the muscle.

Experiencing tight muscles? Acute pain? If you’re looking for a tried-and-true way to take the tension out of your muscles and get some pain relief, consider dry needling.

Dry needling is a safe, effective therapy to achieve pain relief and greater freedom in your body.
Ultra-thin acupuncture needles are inserted into dysfunctional areas of soft tissue often focusing on myofascial trigger points – small bundles of uber tight muscle fibres that create outsized day to day pain and restriction. This treatment allows the whole muscle to relax, in turn restoring health to the muscle tissue, relieving pain and allowing better overall function.

How Does It Work?

The use of the needle releases the trigger points. With the needle, the pain receptors are stimulated and the brain interprets that in a way that it tells the muscle to turn off the pain and relax.

The use of the dry needles in trigger points and surrounding muscle tissue, fascia and tendons stimulates certain types of pain receptors within the soft tissues. This activates the nervous system in such a way that it restores a greater brain/body connection and allows the soft tissue (muscles etc) to restore a more normal, healthy resting form rather than being in a constant state of tension.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it painful?

With dry needling, you’ll experience a different type of discomfort, but it’s on the same level as massage. As anyone who has had deep tissue remedial massage knows, it is not always comfortable and relaxing but the results are well and truly worth it. Similarly, with dry needle therapy there is some discomfort but, whilst it is and different sort of pain, it is no more than experienced with deep tissue massage and equally worth it for the benefit you’ll get.

When will I notice an improvement?

The results will be different from person to person and condition to condition. Some patients experience instant relief while others will feel considerably better a day or two later.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have dry needling?

Those who are pregnant or have electrical gear inside them shouldn’t have the therapy. Additionally, anyone with: abnormal bleeding tendency, compromised immune system, patients with epilepsy, or diabetes.

Will my private health fund cover dry needling?

Yes, it can be claimed as a remedial massage.

Is Dry Needling different to Acupuncture?

Yes. Although there is a lot of overlap in terms of acupressure points and myofascial trigger points used in both modalities, there is a core differnece. Dry needling grew out of trigger point research and is based on a western medicine mindset specifically targeting tension and dysfucntion in the soft tissues. Acupuncture differes in that is it based eastern medicine ideas of restoring energy flow through meridian lines.
